Cut 158 located in downtown Joliet, Illinois, turned out to be the dining surprise of the last few months and maybe in the last year. I'd seen an ad for CUT 158 on television and it immediately sparked an interest in my tastebud senses. I had never heard of it and was intrigued by the notion of an upscale dining establishment in downtown Joliet.
What a delicious and tasty evening of dining. It's a dining daydream captured right in the heart of the satellite city to Chicago's far southwest regions. At the moment, the city is tearing up the street where the restaurant is located (right next to the legendary Rialto Theater), but don't let that deter you from a night of fine dining. Valet parking is available and street parking is an option. A stacked parking lot is located directly across the street.
Cut 158 is a classic steakhouse that sets a fine table whether you like steak or not. There are multiple options on a diverse menu that springs forth with flavorful entrees, appetizers, salads and desserts. The filet was superb as were the steak medallions. Expertly crafted from a taste perspective, but also lovely to look at with a strong touch of artisanship in the details on the plate. If you are steak-phobic, try the beautiful grilled salmon, even though there are lots of options on the menu. All of the entrees were absolutely perfect and they had fantastic paired sides. The red potatoes and the rice were off the charts good. Go, go, go for the garlic shrimp appetizer. Oh my. Shrimp in garlic, olive oil and cheese. You take the warm wonderful bread and you have your own dipping fest. Desserts are delicious.
The average cook cannot duplicate these meals at home, so sharpen your knives (well, you don't have to, since they will) and take a pleasant drive to Joliet.
A sophisticated and lovely ambiance isn't necessarily dazzling, but for the outskirts of a large metro area it comes darn close to dazzling. Cut 158 is elegant and it's not a crammed experience. Tables are far apart, so no one hears a conversation from another table. Cut 158 could easily be in downtown Chicago.
The service was outstanding on all levels. Exceedingly professional by the entire wait staff. John was our server and his attention to all details was exceptional.
The only downside and for most people it wouldn't have mattered, but the building is old and the ceilings are high, so there was a cold dash of air hitting the backs of two of the wimps at the table. I'm one of those wimps. Bring a jacket, just in case.
Quite literally one of the best restaurants in the Chicagoland area.
